Via Dolorosa---The Way of the Cross

Via Dolorosa is the way followed by Christ bearing his cross to Golgotha, the place of his crucifixion. There are fourteen Stations marked on Via Dolorosa, nine along the route and five inside the Church of Holy Sepulchre. indicating the very last few events of Jesus' life.

This is the beginning of Via Dolorosa, which starts near St. Stephen's Gate

The Church of Ecce Homo is built on the site of the Arch of Ecce Homo (Behold the Man), where Pilat presented Jesus to the crowd (John 19:6).

The Fifth Station. "As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear His cross" (Matt. 27:32).

The Sixth Station is the place of the house of St. Veronica. She is said to have stepped forward to wipe the blood and dirt from Jesus' face, and his image remained on the cloth. Hence the name, Vera Icone (true likeness) given to this woman.
